WoW Midnight — Vengeance Demon Hunter Guide

A complete Vengeance Demon Hunter tank guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, talent builds for Annihilator and Aldrachi Reaver, openers and priority lists, defensive cooldown management, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.

Overview

Vengeance Demon Hunter combines damage reduction, self-healing, high mobility, and enemy control into a leather tank that rewards active cooldown management over passive mitigation. The spec changed meaningfully in Midnight — defensives no longer stack or ramp, and the rotation is simpler overall. The core loop centers on generating Soul Fragments via Fracture and spending them on Spirit Bomb at 6 stacks.

Hero class: Starts at level 8. Available to Blood Elf (Horde), Night Elf and Void Elf (Alliance) only.

Unique utility: Chaos Brand — increases enemy magic damage taken by 3%. Unique to Demon Hunters.

Hero Talent Paths

Path Identity Notes
Annihilator Passive tree rewarding proper rotation execution; Spirit Bomb resets on Metamorphosis Recommended for both raid and M+ — easier to pilot, generally superior performance
Aldrachi Reaver Rending Strike debuffs, Glaive Flurry mechanics, priority-target damage amplification Competitive funnel damage in M+; slightly lower overall but suits players familiar with older VDH

Strengths

  • Powerful burst damage for snap threat
  • Frequently available defensive cooldowns
  • Well-rounded healing and mitigation toolkit
  • High natural dodge and parry avoidance
  • Excellent mobility; can cancel knockbacks with Glide
  • Chaos Brand group utility (unique to class)
  • Strong solo capability

Weaknesses

  • Multiple defensives require juggling rather than passive uptime — can't set and forget
  • Short-duration defensives need careful overlap timing
  • Key debuffs (Fiery Brand, Frailty) are target-dependent
  • Environmental damage bypasses healing mechanics

Midnight Changes of Note

Removed: Demonic, The Hunt, Illuminated Sigils. Added: Untethered Rage (multiple ranks), Vengeful Beast. Defensives no longer stack or ramp. Rotation simplified overall.

Stat Priority

All secondary stats are close in value — item level leads by a significant margin. Haste is preferred because it makes gameplay feel smoother and reduces defensive cooldown timers.

Priority Stat Notes
1 Agility Item level is far ahead of everything else
2 Haste Reduces defensive cooldown timers; increases proc rates; smooths gameplay
3 Critical Strike Parry conversions via Riposte — dual offensive and defensive value
4 Versatility Universal damage reduction at half its listed value
5 Mastery Boosts armor conversion during Demon Spikes; marginally last

Diminishing Returns Thresholds

Stat DR Threshold
Critical Strike 1,380 rating
Haste 1,320 rating
Mastery 1,380 rating
Versatility 1,620 rating

Sim your character on Raidbots for personalized optimization. All secondaries are close enough that stat differences rarely outweigh item level.

Talent Builds

Annihilator is the recommended choice for both M+ and Raid — easier to pilot and generally superior performance. Aldrachi Reaver is competitive and suits players comfortable with debuff and glaive management.

Build variants by content:

Content Variants Available
Raid — Single Target Annihilator or Aldrachi Reaver
Raid — Cleave Dedicated cleave build for encounters with temporary adds
Raid — Council Specialized multi-boss setup
Mythic+ Both Hero Talents receive distinct optimization; Annihilator marginally better
Delves Damage-focused; lower survivability requirements

Key talent flexibility notes:

  • Class tree: Final Breath and Live by the Glaive are "extremely low value" — swap for Pursuit, Focused Ire, or Pitch Black based on preference
  • Spec tree: Swap between Calcified Spikes (survivability) and Ascending Flame (damage) based on encounter
  • Do not take Sigil of Chains unless you have specific plans for it — risk of repositioning enemies and breaking mechanics

Rotation & Cooldowns

Core Abilities Reference

Ability Role Notes
Fracture Primary builder Always keep recharging — primary proc generator and Soul Fragment source
Immolation Aura Passive AoE + resources Threat, damage, and resource generation — keep on cooldown
Spirit Bomb Primary spender Use at exactly 6 Soul Fragments for maximum value
Soul Cleave Filler spender + Fury dump Use with 1+ Souls, or as pure Fury dump at 0 Souls
Fel Devastation Major DPS/sustain cooldown 40-sec CD (28–34 sec with Darkglare Boon)

Resource rules:

  1. Generate Soul Fragments via Fracture at 2 charges — never cap charges
  2. Spirit Bomb at exactly 6 Souls for maximum value
  3. Balance building and spending in waves — avoid Fury overcap
  4. Press cooldowns consistently to maintain GCD uptime

Opener — Annihilator

Step Action
Pre-pull Precast Sigil of Flame (single-target only)
1 Infernal Strike into pack
2 Spirit Bomb (if Souls saved pre-pull)
3 Immolation Aura
4 Fracture (generate resources)
5 Spirit Bomb (at 6 Souls)
6 Felblade (if Fury insufficient)
7 Fel Devastation (channel fully)
8 Metamorphosis (group enemies)
9 Fracture to 6 Souls
10 Spirit Bomb
11 Soul Cleave (Fury dump)

Opener — Aldrachi Reaver

Step Action
1 Infernal Strike into pack
2 Immolation Aura
3 Sigil of Spite (Art of the Glaive activation)
4 Reaver's Glaive (activate buff pattern)
5 Fracture with Rending Strike
6 Soul Cleave with Glaive Flurry
7 Metamorphosis (group enemies)
8 Felblade (Fury generation)
9 Fracture to 6 Souls
10 Spirit Bomb
11 Soul Cleave (Fury dump)

Single-Target Priority — Annihilator

  1. Infernal Strike (2 charges available)
  2. Metamorphosis (if Spirit Bomb CD >10 sec)
  3. Fracture (2 charges available)
  4. Spirit Bomb (at 6 Souls)
  5. Immolation Aura
  6. Sigil of Flame
  7. Soul Cleave (1+ Souls)
  8. Fel Devastation (50+ Fury)
  9. Soul Cleave (0 Souls — Fury dump)
  10. Throw Glaive (filler)

Single-Target Priority — Aldrachi Reaver

Same as Annihilator with these modifications:

  • Fracture with Rending Strike debuff elevated in priority
  • Soul Cleave with Glaive Flurry for Fury of the Aldrachi procs
  • Sigil of Spite synced with Art of the Glaive activation
  • Reaver's Glaive buff activation takes higher precedence than standard Fracture

AoE (2+ Targets)

Same core loop as single-target. Fel Devastation gains slightly higher priority. Aldrachi Reaver: focus on landing Fury of the Aldrachi on maximum targets.

Defensive Cooldowns

Ability Cooldown Usage
Metamorphosis 2 min Use on cooldown; do not refresh if existing buff has >5 sec remaining
Fiery Brand 48–60 sec Use on cooldown; hold for incoming tankbusters
Demon Spikes 20 sec (Haste-reduced) Maintain when other defensives are inactive
Darkness 3–5 min Use for group damage phases and high-add density pulls

Offensive Cooldowns

Ability Cooldown Usage
Fel Devastation 40 sec (28–34 sec with Darkglare Boon) Use on cooldown
Soul Carver 60 sec Use on cooldown when below 3 Souls
Sigil of Spite 60 sec Sync with Fiery Brand when Fiery Demise is talented

Advanced — Fracture Optimization (Annihilator)

Do not cast Fracture when at full Voidfall stacks or while actively spending them — generation is blocked. Prioritize Fracture when approaching the third Voidfall stack.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Spirit Bomb at exactly 6 Souls — fewer than 6 is a consistent value loss. Build to 6, then spend.
  • Never idle Fracture — it is the engine of the spec. Capped charges mean wasted Soul Fragment generation and lost proc opportunities.
  • Fiery Brand proactively — apply it before the tankbuster lands, not after. The 40% damage reduction window is only useful if it covers the hit.
  • Demon Spikes as the baseline — use it whenever other defensives are on cooldown. It should have near-100% uptime during active tanking.
  • Darkness for group damage — Darkness provides a 20% magic damage reduction aura to the group. Use it on telegraphed group damage phases, not as a personal emergency button.
  • Do not take Sigil of Chains casually — it pulls enemies toward the sigil center. In dungeons, this repositions packs and can break casts, routes, and mechanics. Only take it with a plan.
  • Annihilator for new VDH players — the passive nature of Annihilator's power lets you focus on learning the defensive rotation without simultaneously managing glaive procs and debuff windows.
