WoW Midnight — Protection Warrior Guide

A complete Protection Warrior tank guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, Mountain Thane and Colossus builds, Shield Block and Ignore Pain management, opener and priority list, defensive cooldown rotation, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.

Overview

Protection Warrior is the definitive "sword and board" tank — an aggressive spec with a fast-paced rotation, powerful offensive cooldowns, and the single most effective mitigation mechanic in the game: Shield Block. The core loop is generating Rage through Devastate, Thunder Clap, and Shield Slam, spending it on Ignore Pain for damage absorption, and maintaining Shield Block uptime to reduce all incoming melee damage to manageable levels. Protection rewards constant aggression and cooldown management, and punishes moments when Shield Block falls off during dangerous windows.

Unique utility: Rallying Cry (group HP increase), Spell Reflection, Disrupting Shout (AoE interrupt), Battle Shout, Commanding Shout, excellent Heroic Leap mobility.

Hero Talent Paths

Path Identity Notes
Mountain Thane Lightning-focused; Thunder Clap as Rage generator; Storm Shield; superior rotation flow Recommended for all content — better overall flow, Rage generation, and defensive utility
Colossus Strength-focused; adds Demolish for burst damage; enhanced Shockwave options Competitive damage; slower rotation feel; good for Delves where Demolish cooldown is more frequent

Strengths

  • Shield Block is the single most powerful mitigation mechanic in the game against physical damage
  • Short cooldowns enable flexible defensive coverage of mechanics
  • Frequent offensive cooldowns for strong consistent damage output
  • Excellent mobility (Heroic Leap, Charge)
  • Spell Reflection turns magic vulnerabilities into strengths in Mythic+

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to damage spikes when Shield Block falls off or positioning fails
  • Self-healing does not scale with damage intake the way other tanks do
  • Weak against frequent unblockable sources (DoTs, magic) without advanced cooldown planning
  • Requires significant skill and encounter knowledge for optimal cooldown management

Stat Priority

Priority Stat Notes
1 Strength Provides parry chance, increases armor from Vanguard passive, boosts attack power
2 Haste Best secondary — reduces GCD, increases Rage generation, DPS, and Shield Block availability
3 Critical Strike Strong for damage; provides parry on melee attacks in M+ (don't rely on it as a primary defense)
4 Versatility Flat damage/reduction including trinkets, potions, enchants
5 Mastery Increases block chance and critical block; least effective against unblockable sources

Diminishing Returns Thresholds

Stat DR Threshold
Critical Strike 1,380 rating
Haste 1,320 rating
Mastery 1,380 rating
Versatility 1,620 rating

Talent Builds

Mountain Thane is recommended for raid and Mythic+. The superior Rage generation and rotation flow make it the more comfortable and effective pick in most content. Colossus is viable and competitive on damage, and is the preferred choice for Delves where Demolish's cooldown cycles more frequently.

Mountain Thane — Raid

Emphasises Thunder Clap and Thunder Blast as the highest-priority abilities. Battle-Scarred Veteran can be dropped for additional damage talents if its defensive benefit is not needed for the encounter.

Mountain Thane — Mythic+

Prioritises frequent Thunder Clap casting with added defensive talents. Incorporates Disrupting Shout and Rallying Cry for group support. Strong defensive bonuses suit higher-key content.

Colossus — Delves/Open World

Demolish functions as a rapid cooldown nuke paired with Thunder Clap for efficient AoE damage. Best in solo content where you have more control over cooldown alignment.

Rotation & Cooldowns

Core Abilities Reference

Ability Role Notes
Shield Slam Primary Rage gen + damage Highest-priority offensive ability; keep on cooldown
Thunder Clap AoE Rage gen + Rend application Keep on cooldown; activates Thunder Blast charges
Thunder Blast (Mountain Thane) Empowered Thunder Clap Use at 2 charges inside burst windows
Revenge Rage gen + damage Use when proc'd or on cooldown
Devastate Rage gen filler Lowest-priority offensive filler
Shield Block Primary mitigation 2 charges, 6-sec duration; blocks all melee attacks, increases Shield Slam damage by 30%; keep rolling
Ignore Pain Rage spender + absorb Prevents 50% of damage taken; absorbs up to 30% of max health; use to avoid Rage cap
Avatar Offensive cooldown 20% damage increase
Demoralizing Shout Defensive cooldown Reduces enemy damage output by 20–25%
Shield Charge Stun + Shield Block Stuns target and grants Shield Block charges
Demolish (Colossus) Burst nuke High-damage channel; use on cooldown
Execute Execute finisher Below 20% health (or 35% with talent); use to dump Rage
Impending Victory Self-heal Use when healing is needed; low cooldown

Shield Block rules: 2 charges, 6 seconds each. Always keep at least 1 charge rolling in active combat. Maintain constant Shield Block coverage during all melee damage windows. Dropping Shield Block during heavy physical damage is the most punishing mistake a Protection Warrior can make.

Ignore Pain rules: Prevents 50% of damage taken and absorbs up to 30% of max health. Use to spend Rage before capping — a full Rage bar with no pending Shield Block charges is always a mistake.

Opener

Step Action
Pre-pull Charge into combat
1 Demolish (Colossus only)
2 Taunt (establish threat)
3 Avatar
4 Shield Block
5 Demoralizing Shout
6 Shield Charge (stun + Shield Block charges)
Begin core rotation

Priority — Mountain Thane

  1. Thunder Clap (highest priority — activates Thunder Blast charges)
  2. Shield Slam (on cooldown)
  3. Thunder Blast (at 2 charges inside burst windows)
  4. Avatar (on cooldown)
  5. Shield Block (maintain uptime; spend charges before they overcap)
  6. Revenge (on cooldown or proc)
  7. Demoralizing Shout (on cooldown — treat as a rotation ability, not just a save)
  8. Shield Charge (on cooldown)
  9. Execute (below 20% health)
  10. Ignore Pain (approaching Rage cap; or as a filler absorb)
  11. Devastate (filler)

Priority — Colossus

Same as Mountain Thane, with:

  • Demolish elevated to top priority — use on cooldown; it is your primary DPS cooldown
  • Lower Thunder Blast priority (not available in this build)

AoE

AoE rotation mirrors single-target — Thunder Clap and Revenge hit all nearby enemies. No additional AoE priority changes are needed; just ensure Thunder Clap coverage remains constant.

Cooldown Reference

Cooldown Notes
Shield Block 2 charges, 6-sec duration. Blocks all melee attacks. Increases Shield Slam damage by 30%. Keep continuously active during all physical damage phases. Letting it drop during tank busters or sustained melee is the most critical error in the spec.
Avatar 20% damage increase; reduces Thunder Clap cooldown (Mountain Thane). Use on cooldown — it is a DPS cooldown, not purely defensive. Align with other burst abilities when possible.
Demoralizing Shout 20–25% enemy damage reduction. Treat as a rotation cooldown, not an emergency button. It should cycle continuously, not sit idle.
Shield Charge Stuns target; grants immediate Shield Block charges. Use on cooldown for both damage and the free Shield Block grant.
Last Stand Large HP increase and healing for 15 seconds. Emergency cooldown — use when incoming damage threatens to overwhelm your active Shield Block + Ignore Pain.
Spell Reflection Reflects the next targeted spell back at the caster. In Mythic+, this is often the most impactful cooldown in your kit. Identify magic casts to reflect during planning.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Shield Block must not drop during melee damage — this is the cardinal rule. Two charges regenerate over time, but letting both expire simultaneously during a tank buster or sustained melee phase is recoverable only with emergency cooldowns. Watch your charges constantly.
  • Ignore Pain is a Rage dump, not an emergency tool — use it proactively when approaching Rage cap. Sitting at 100 Rage with nothing to spend it on is always wrong. Ignore Pain is available; press it.
  • Demoralizing Shout is a rotation cooldown — it reduces incoming damage by 20–25%. Treating it as an emergency button means it sits on cooldown during all the dangerous moments when you needed it. Put it on a timer and use it constantly.
  • Spell Reflection is your secret weapon in Mythic+ — identify specific magic casts on enemy mobs that you can reflect. Communicating this with your group and timing Spell Reflection to negate a key cast is often the difference between a clean pull and a wipe.
  • Avatar is offensive, not defensive — it reduces Thunder Clap's cooldown and increases damage. Use it on cooldown as a DPS button, not held "just in case." Holding Avatar is holding Rage; holding Rage is not pressing Shield Block.
  • Mountain Thane: Thunder Clap before everything — the entire rotation is built around Thunder Clap. It generates Rage, activates Thunder Blast charges, and deals AoE damage. Never let it sit idle.
