WoW Midnight — Protection Paladin Guide

A complete Protection Paladin tank guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, Templar and Lightsmith builds, Holy Power management, defensive cooldown rotation, opener and priority lists, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.

Overview

Protection Paladin is a plate tank built around Holy Power generation and Shield of the Righteous uptime. The core loop is generating Holy Power through Judgment, Blessed Hammer, and Hammer of Wrath, then spending it on Shield of the Righteous for damage smoothing — or Word of Glory when healing is the priority. Survivability comes not from passive mitigation alone but from reactive self-healing and precisely timed defensive cooldowns.

Available to: All races.

Unique utility: Aura Mastery (30% group damage reduction), Blessing of Sacrifice, Blessing of Protection, Lay on Hands, Blessing of Freedom.

Core principle: Five rules drive all Prot Paladin play — never overcap Holy Power, generate resources consistently, smooth damage intake with Shield of the Righteous, heal proactively with Word of Glory, and plan defensive cooldown timing rather than reacting late.

Hero Talent Paths

Path Identity Notes
Templar Divine Toll and Hammer of Light burst windows; Shake the Heavens AoE Recommended for all content — strong burst AoE makes it the go-to for M+
Lightsmith Holy Bulwark absorbs and Sacred Weapon uptime; passive survivability Viable alternative; both paths are very close in all content — choose based on preference

Strengths

  • Excellent group utility (Blessing of Sacrifice, Protection, Freedom)
  • Strong self-healing via Word of Glory and Hand of the Protector
  • Multiple crowd control options (Hammer of Justice, Turn Evil, Blinding Light)
  • Magic damage mitigation and bleed removal
  • Passive damage reduction through Mastery: Divine Bulwark

Weaknesses

  • Shield of the Righteous requires Holy Power setup — reactive tanking is punished
  • Second-lowest health pool among tanks
  • High punishment for mistakes; unforgiving when defensive timing is off
  • Limited mobility beyond Divine Steed
  • Reliant on defensive cooldown rotation to offset spike damage

Stat Priority

Priority Stat Notes
1 Strength Always follow item level
2 Haste Reduces GCD; increases Holy Power generation; maintain at least 8,000 rating
3 Versatility All-round damage/reduction; scales both offense and defense
4 Critical Strike Increases damage and parry chance; stronger in M+ than raid
5 Mastery Increases block chance (Divine Bulwark) and Attack Power

Item level upgrades generally outweigh secondary stat optimization. The exception: never drop below ~8,000 Haste rating — the GCD reduction and Holy Power generation difference is noticeable. Sim with Raidbots if optimizing at higher gear levels.

Diminishing Returns Thresholds

Stat DR Threshold
Critical Strike 1,380 rating
Haste 1,320 rating
Mastery 1,380 rating
Versatility 1,620 rating

Talent Builds

Both Templar and Lightsmith are competitive. Templar is the default recommendation due to its burst AoE ceiling in Mythic+; Lightsmith's passive survivability makes it a valid choice if you prefer a smoother defensive profile.

Templar — Raid

Simple and effective. Priority: keep Judgment and Blessed Hammer on cooldown, spend Holy Power efficiently, align Divine Toll with 0 Holy Power for maximum value.

Templar — Mythic+

Revolves around lining up Avenging Wrath and Divine Toll every minute for enormous AoE burst windows. Single-target is slightly reduced compared to the raid build, but the burst AoE compensation is significant.

Lightsmith — Raid

Alternates Holy Bulwark and Sacred Weapon for a more passive survivability profile. Maximise Holy Power generation during Avenging Wrath windows to empower Blessing of the Forge.

Lightsmith — Mythic+ (Best Lightsmith option)

Favoured if you prefer Lightsmith's playstyle in dungeons. Passive absorbs reduce spike damage pressure during high-density pulls.

4 Divine Toll + Hammer of Light (Templar) / Divine Toll alone (Lightsmith)
Resume normal priority

Single-Target Priority — Templar

  5. Divine Toll (with 0 Holy Power)
  6. Hammer of Light (on cooldown)
  7. Blessed Hammer / Hammer of the Righteous (on cooldown)

AoE

AoE rotation mirrors single-target — damage abilities hit multiple targets inherently. Templar's Mythic+ build adds significant burst AoE during Divine Toll + Avenging Wrath windows.

Cooldown Reference

Cooldown Notes
Avenging Wrath 2-min CD. +20% damage/healing/crit. Transforms Judgment into Hammer of Wrath. Align potions and on-use trinkets with every cast.
Ardent Defender 20% damage reduction. Also prevents one lethal hit per cooldown period. Use proactively on predictable spike damage.
Guardian of Ancient Kings 50% damage reduction. Longest cooldown — reserve for high-danger phases or when other defensives are unavailable.
Divine Shield Complete immunity for 8 seconds. Emergency self-defense or mechanic skip. Removes threat — communicate with your healer before use.
Divine Toll Use with 0 Holy Power to avoid wasting generated stacks. Fires Holy Shock/Avenger's Shield at 5 targets simultaneously.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Never overcap Holy Power — Shield of the Righteous is your primary damage smoother. Any generator used at 5 stacks is wasted. Watch your Holy Power constantly.
  • Word of Glory is not a last resort — use it proactively around 40–50% health. Waiting until you're critically low means your healer has already had to react, and a well-timed Word of Glory can prevent a spike that your healer can't cover.
  • Ardent Defender is a rotation cooldown, not a panic button — its 20% reduction is most valuable used on a predictable incoming damage window, not as a reactive panic button after you've already taken the spike.
  • Guardian of Ancient Kings is your panic button — the 50% reduction is enormous. Hold it for genuine emergencies or assigned heavy-damage phases. Using it on trash pulls is almost always wrong.
  • Maintain your Haste floor — below ~8,000 Haste rating, Holy Power generation slows enough to feel clunky. Don't sacrifice Haste below this threshold for other secondary stats, even if the item level is slightly higher.
  • Templar M+: align Avenging Wrath and Divine Toll — the entire burst AoE profile of the Templar M+ build revolves around these two cooldowns landing together. Missing the alignment significantly reduces your AoE output.
