WoW Midnight — Havoc Demon Hunter Guide
A complete Havoc Demon Hunter guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, talent builds for Fel-Scarred and Aldrachi Reaver, openers and priority lists, Inertia vs Low Mover variants, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.
Overview
Havoc Demon Hunter is a fast, mobile dual-glaive melee DPS spec built around rolling cooldowns and Fury management. The core loop is generating and spending Fury while cycling Blade Dance, Immolation Aura, Eye Beam, and Essence Break — with Metamorphosis as the 2-minute burst window that defines every damage phase.
Hero class: Starts at level 8. Available to Blood Elf (Horde), Night Elf and Void Elf (Alliance) only.
Unique utility: Chaos Brand — a passive debuff that increases enemy magic damage taken by 3%. Unique to Demon Hunters.
Hero Talent Paths
| Path | Identity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fel-Scarred | Empowers Metamorphosis; Demonsurge scales for high AoE | Recommended for all content — superior in both ST and AoE |
| Aldrachi Reaver | Reaver's Glaive and Wounded Quarry for priority-target funnel damage | Viable but meaningfully behind Fel-Scarred overall |
Strengths
- Exceptional self-sustain through Soul Fragments
- Top-tier mobility
- Consistent AoE output
- Chaos Brand group utility (unique to the class)
- Strong solo performance
- Passive magic damage reduction
Weaknesses
- High threat generation in AoE despite mitigation talents
- Mobility abilities create dangerous positioning risks
- Significant DPS loss when swapping ST and AoE builds mid-session without rebuilding
- Melee range dependent
Stat Priority
| Priority | Stat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Agility | Always follow item level |
| 2 | Critical Strike | Know Your Enemy talent causes Crit to increase its own value — compounding returns |
| 3 | Mastery | Enhances Chaos damage; also increases movement speed via Pursuit |
| 4 | Haste | Speeds attack rate and reduces cooldowns — falls off quickly vs Crit/Mastery |
| 5 | Versatility | Flat damage/reduction; lowest priority |
Diminishing Returns Thresholds
| Stat | DR Threshold |
|---|---|
| Critical Strike | 1,380 rating |
| Mastery | 1,380 rating |
| Haste | 1,320 rating |
| Versatility | 1,620 rating |

Talent Builds
Fel-Scarred is the recommended choice for all content. Two playstyle variants exist within the Fel-Scarred path — pick based on your comfort with movement-heavy play:
Inertia Variant (Primary — higher ceiling)
Built around movement to proc the Inertia talent for bonus damage windows. Eye Beam triggers Inertia; Vengeful Retreat and The Hunt align with it. Higher skill floor — requires comfort with positional movement as part of the rotation.
Best for: Raid (both ST and cleave builds using Shattered Destiny and Relentless Onslaught), Mythic+ (Immolation Aura talents, Ragefire, A Fire Inside for AoE scaling).
Low Mover / No Mover Variant (Recommended for learners)
Drops Inertia and Tactical Retreat. Picks up additional Immolation Aura talents instead. Slightly lower ceiling, significantly easier execution. Recommended until comfortable with the Inertia movement requirement.
Best for: Raid, Mythic+, Delves. Identical to M+ Low Mover build for Delve content.
Mythic+ talent notes
- Swap Soul Cleanse or Burn It Out based on whether the dungeon has curses/diseases to dispel.
- Ragefire and A Fire Inside are the core AoE scaling talents.

Rotation & Cooldowns
Core Abilities Reference
| Ability | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Blade Dance / Death Sweep | AoE melee strike | 10s CD; Death Sweep is the Meta-empowered version |
| Immolation Aura | Fury gen + fire damage | 6-second AoE; generates 20 Fury; keep on cooldown |
| Eye Beam | Primary burst | Channeled Chaos damage; guaranteed crits |
| Chaos Strike / Annihilation | Primary Fury spender | 20% Fury refund chance; Annihilation is the Meta version |
| Metamorphosis | 2-min burst cooldown | Resets Eye Beam and Blade Dance; defines burst windows |
| The Hunt | Charge + damage | Ties to Inertia buff proc in Inertia builds |
| Vengeful Retreat | Backwards dash | Procs Initiative and Inertia |
| Essence Break | Damage amplifier | Empowers next several Chaos Strikes; must align with Meta |
| Throw Glaive | Ranged filler (Fel-Scarred) | Low-priority filler |
| Reaver's Glaive | Core mechanic (Aldrachi Reaver) | Replaces Throw Glaive as a major damage button |
Fury rules: Maintain enough Fury to cast Blade Dance on cooldown. Dump excess into Chaos Strike. Overcapping Fury while following the priority list is acceptable and not a DPS loss.
Opener — Fel-Scarred
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Pre-pull | Pre-cast Immolation Aura; use potion and on-use trinkets |
| 1 | The Hunt |
| 2 | Felblade (optional, Inertia builds) |
| 3 | Eye Beam |
| 4 | Essence Break |
| 5–6 | Death Sweep × 2 |
| 7 | Chaos Strike |
| 8 | Vengeful Retreat + Metamorphosis (simultaneously) |
| 9 | Death Sweep |
| → | Resume normal priority list |
Opener — Aldrachi Reaver
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Pre-pull | Pre-cast Immolation Aura; use potion and trinkets |
| 1 | The Hunt |
| 2 | Reaver's Glaive |
| 3 | Eye Beam |
| 4 | Chaos Strike |
| 5–6 | Death Sweep × 2 |
| 7 | Vengeful Retreat + Metamorphosis |
| 8 | Eye Beam |
| → | Resume normal priority list |
Single-Target Priority — Fel-Scarred
- The Hunt (if Inertia buff is active)
- Death Sweep
- Immolation Aura (if capped on charges)
- Eye Beam
- Essence Break (during Metamorphosis)
- Metamorphosis
- Blade Dance
- Chaos Strike / Annihilation
- Throw Glaive (filler)
Single-Target Priority — Aldrachi Reaver
Same structure as Fel-Scarred with these changes:
- Reaver's Glaive replaces Throw Glaive as a major damage button — elevated priority
- Maintain Reaver's Mark stacks on target for damage amplification
- Note: Reaver's Mark does not stack across targets — it resets on target switch
AoE (2+ Targets)
Rotation is nearly identical to single-target with increased emphasis on:
- Immolation Aura spam — talent synergies scale heavily with enemy count
- Aldrachi Reaver: apply Reaver's Glaive empowerments to Chaos Strike first, then Blade Dance
Cooldown Reference
| Cooldown | Notes |
|---|---|
| Metamorphosis | 2-min CD. Resets Eye Beam and Blade Dance. Align potions and on-use trinkets with every cast. |
| Eye Beam | Guaranteed crits; primary burst ability. Never idle. |
| Essence Break | Must align with Metamorphosis. Misaligned Essence Break significantly underperforms. |
| Immolation Aura | Keep rolling — it is both a DPS and Fury generator. |
Demonsurge empowerments expire if re-triggered via cooldowns before spending them. Spend empowerments before casting ability-resetting powers.

Best in Slot Gear
Season 1 BiS. 4-piece Devouring Reaver's tier set (shoulders, chest, gloves, legs) is the priority acquisition target. Note: the tier set is passive power in this tier — it does not alter your rotation.
| Slot | Item | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Lightless Lament | Midnight Falls (raid) |
| Off-Hand | Emblazoned Sunglaive | Voidspire (raid) |
| Head | Spellsnap Shadowmask | Magister's Terrace (M+) |
| Neck | Amulet of the Abyssal Hymn | Midnight Falls (raid) |
| Shoulders | Devouring Reaver's Exhaustplates | Tier Set |
| Cloak | Adherent's Silken Shroud | Crafting |
| Chest | Devouring Reaver's Engine | Tier Set |
| Wrists | Silvermoon Agent's Deflectors | Crafting |

| Trinket 1 | Algeth'ar Puzzle Box | Algeth'ar Academy (M+) |
| Trinket 2 | Gaze of the Alnseer | Chimaerus (raid) |
Crafted priority: Spellbreaker's Warglaive (weapon, Darkmoon Sigil: Void embellishment) → Adherent's Silken Shroud (cloak, Arcanoweave Lining) → Silvermoon Agent's Deflectors (wrists, Arcanoweave Lining).
Upgrade priority: Weapon first → strong trinkets → lowest item level pieces, prioritizing tier slots (shoulders, chest, legs).
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Start with the Low Mover build — Inertia builds require movement as an active rotation element. The damage ceiling is higher, but playing a Low Mover build correctly beats playing an Inertia build sloppily. Learn the core loop first.
- Align Essence Break with Metamorphosis — Essence Break outside of Meta is significantly weaker. If it's not lining up, something in your cooldown sequencing is off.
- Chaos Brand is free group utility — it's passive, but make sure your raid lead knows you bring it. It's unique to the class and can influence comp decisions.
- Immolation Aura is not a rotational backup — it is a core button that should never be sitting idle. It generates Fury and deals meaningful damage.
- Reaver's Mark is target-locked — Aldrachi Reaver players: switching targets resets your mark stacks. In fights with frequent target swapping, Fel-Scarred is almost always the better choice.
- Don't cap Fury passively — if you're approaching cap and Blade Dance is on cooldown, dump into Chaos Strike. Overcapping is always worse than an "early" Chaos Strike.
