WoW Midnight — Frost Death Knight Guide

A complete Frost Death Knight guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, talent builds for both Hero Talent paths, full openers and priority lists, weapon runeforge choices, proc management, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.

Overview

Frost Death Knight is a proc-management spec. The rotation is not a fixed sequence — it is a priority system that reacts to Killing Machine and Rime procs. The core loop is consistent across all builds and both Hero Talent paths, which makes the spec easy to learn while leaving room to optimise.

Core loop:

  1. Spend Killing Machine procs on Obliterate (single-target) or Frostscythe (AoE)
  2. Spend Rime procs on Howling Blast (free + 275% bonus damage)
  3. Dump Runic Power with Frost Strike (ST) or Glacial Advance (AoE) between procs
  4. Cycle both resources through Runic Empowerment — spending one generates the other

Three guiding principles:

  • Proc management — Killing Machine-empowered Obliterate is the primary damage dealer; never sit on procs
  • Resource cycling — keep both Runes and Runic Power moving to avoid downtime
  • Cooldown usage — Empower Rune Weapon is an on-demand tool to avoid casting primary abilities without a Killing Machine proc

Hero Talent Paths

Path Focus Notes
Deathbringer Reaper's Mark syncs with Pillar of Frost; Exterminate stacks; Frostwyrm's Fury timing-sensitive Recommended for all content — superior tuning in both ST and cleave
Rider of the Apocalypse Summons the Four Horsemen passively; Death Charge mobility; 90-second burst window Secondary choice; excels in open-world content; "offers nothing special in terms of DPS"

Strengths

  • Excellent cleave that maintains strong priority-target focus
  • Core rotation is identical across all builds — fast to learn
  • Strong defensive toolkit
  • Cooldowns require no setup phase — activate and go

Weaknesses

  • Susceptible to forced downtime, especially around Breath of Sindragosa
  • Limited build variety — can feel repetitive over a long session
  • Single-target throughput trails some other ranged and melee specs

Stat Priority

Stat priority is identical for both Hero Talent paths.

Priority Stat Notes
1 Strength Always follow item level
2 Critical Strike Directly feeds Killing Machine and proc rates; extends Pillar of Frost via The Long Winter
3 Mastery 2% Frost damage per 1% Mastery rating
4 Haste Increases rune regen and GCD reduction — but these scale together, reducing marginal value
5 Versatility Flat damage/DR; lowest priority

Diminishing Returns Thresholds

Stat DR Threshold
Critical Strike 1,380 rating
Haste 1,320 rating
Mastery 1,380 rating
Versatility 1,620 rating

Talent Builds

Deathbringer — Raid (Best)

CsPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMDYmZMzMDY2mZmZmZxMjMjxMDzw4BMzgZmZmZAAAAAAAAAwY2GYALglhJkxCmZMzMwMAGmZAmBM

Single-target focused. For add-heavy fights, swap Runic Overflow / Icy Onslaught / Frigid Executioner → Frostscythe / Biting Cold / Gathering Storm. Optional: drop Smothering Offense, take The Long Winter for AoE-focused encounters (trades some priority-target damage for overall output).

Deathbringer — Mythic+ (Best)

CsPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMAzMjZmZAz2MzMzMLmZkZMmZmZGYMzwMzMjZAAAAAAAAAwY2GYALglhJkxCmZYmBmBwwMDwMgB

Cleave and multi-target with Breath of Sindragosa and Frostbane. Note: restrictive on talent swaps. Alternative variant: drop far-right capstones, take The Long Winter, Avalanche, and Howling Blades instead of Frigid Executioner / Icebreaker / Northwinds. Dual-wield performs better in M+ — two-hand viable but requires Rune of Razorice.

Deathbringer — Delves

CsPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMDYmZMzMDY2mZmZmZxMjMjxYYGgZmZmZmZmZAAAAAAAAAwY2GYALglhJkxCmZmZmBGAGmZAmBM

Rider of the Apocalypse — Raid

Rider of the Apocalypse — Mythic+

Rider of the Apocalypse — Delves

Paste import strings into the Talents window via the Import button (bottom-left of the talent UI). Class tree flex points: Blinding Sleet and Death's Reach are easy swaps on fights without adds that need control.

Rotation & Cooldowns

Core Abilities Reference

Ability Role Notes
Killing Machine Proc (auto-attack crits) Empowers next Obliterate to deal Frost damage and crit; highest non-cooldown priority
Obliterate Primary ST spender Use on Killing Machine proc
Frostscythe AoE replacement for Obliterate Use at 3+ targets; consumes Killing Machine for 4× crit damage
Howling Blast Applies Frost Fever Only cast with Rime proc — free + 275% bonus damage; baseline cast is wasteful
Rime Proc (Frost Strike/Glacial Advance) 45% chance to make next Howling Blast free and 275% stronger
Frost Strike Runic Power spender (ST) Filler between procs
Glacial Advance Runic Power spender (AoE) Replaces Frost Strike at 3+ targets

  8. Frost Strike (to avoid Runic Power cap)
  9. Obliterate (1 Killing Machine stack)
  10. Empower Rune Weapon (to generate Killing Machine)
  11. Frost Strike (filler)
  12. Obliterate (no Killing Machine)

  12. Howling Blast (no Rime — last resort filler only)

AoE Priority (3+ Targets)

Both paths follow their respective single-target priority with two substitutions:

  • Replace Obliterate → Frostscythe
  • Replace Frost Strike → Glacial Advance

Cooldown Reference

Cooldown Notes
Pillar of Frost Never hold. Use on cooldown.
Empower Rune Weapon Use with 2 charges available, or when 3+ Runes exist; also used reactively to generate Killing Machine when needed.
Breath of Sindragosa Primary cooldown; 8-second channel extended by proc consumption. Primary source of forced downtime vulnerability — plan positioning carefully.
Reaper's Mark (Deathbringer) Use on cooldown alongside Pillar of Frost for AoE synergy.
Frostwyrm's Fury (Deathbringer) Timing-critical: cast after Reaper's Mark detonates and after spending Exterminate stacks. Do NOT cast while Exterminate or Reaper's Mark is active — you will waste the overlap damage.

Best in Slot Gear

Season 1 BiS. Three tier pieces (head, chest, gloves — Relentless Rider's set) are priority acquisition targets.

Slot Item Source
Weapon (2H) Bellamy's Final Judgement Lightblinded Vanguard (raid)
Weapon (1H) Blade of the Final Twilight Fallen-King Salhadaar (raid)
Head Relentless Rider's Crown Tier Set
Neck Amulet of the Abyssal Hymn Seat of the Triumvirate (M+)
Shoulders Shoulderplates of Frozen Blood Pit of Saron (M+)
Cloak Rigid Scale Greatcloak Skyreach (M+)
Chest Relentless Rider's Cuirass Tier Set
Wrists Spellbreaker's Bracers Crafting
Gloves Relentless Rider's Bonegrasps Tier Set
Belt Hate-Tied Waistchain Raid
Legs Night Ender's Girdle Raid
Boots Greaves of the Unformed Chimaerus (raid)
Ring 1 Loa Worshiper's Band Crafting
Ring 2 Sin'dorei Band of Hope Raid
Trinket 1 Light Company Guidon Imperator Averzian (raid)
Trinket 2 Gaze of the Alnseer Chimaerus (raid)

Weapon notes:

  • 2H: Bellamy's Final Judgement is the only 2H raid weapon with correct stats (Crit + Mastery) this season.
  • 1H: Blade of the Final Twilight is the only non-crafted Crit/Mastery 1H available. Early alternative: Liferipper's Cutlass (M+).

Crafted priority: Loa Worshiper's Band (ring, embellishment synergy with Garnet gems), then Spellbreaker's Bracers (with Stabilizing Gemstone Bandolier).

Upgrade (crest) priority: Weapons first → strong trinkets → high stat-budget armor (head, shoulders, legs).

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Never cast Howling Blast without a Rime proc — baseline Howling Blast is weak. It is a filler of last resort only. Every GCD spent on a non-Rime Howling Blast is a GCD you could have used on Frost Strike.
  • Frostwyrm's Fury timing (Deathbringer) — wait for Reaper's Mark to detonate and Exterminate stacks to be spent before using Frostwyrm's Fury. Casting it while Exterminate is active wastes the overlap.
  • Breath of Sindragosa positioning — its 8-second channel punishes any forced movement. Know when forced movement is coming in the fight before you activate it.
  • Empower Rune Weapon is a reactive tool — use it when you're about to cast Obliterate without a Killing Machine proc. It generates Killing Machine and runes simultaneously. Don't sit on 2 charges.
  • Dual-wield vs two-hand — both are viable but dual-wield performs better in Mythic+ for most builds. If playing two-hand, swap to Rune of Razorice for optimal boss damage.
  • Sim your runeforge — the runeforge choice depends on your specific build. Using the wrong one is a measurable DPS loss.
