WoW Midnight — Elemental Shaman Guide
A complete Elemental Shaman DPS guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, Stormbringer and Farseer builds, Maelstrom management, opener and priority lists, Ascendance and Stormkeeper cooldown alignment, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.
Overview
Elemental Shaman is a mail-wearing ranged caster that weaves Nature, Fire, and Frost spells to deal damage through Maelstrom generation and overload procs. The core loop is building toward and aligning Stormkeeper with Ascendance for explosive burst windows while filling with Lightning Bolt, Lava Burst, and reactive procs. Elemental offers incredible burst — especially in AoE — with a satisfying priority system that has a low skill floor and genuine room for expression at higher levels.
Weapons: Staff or one-handed mace + shield.
Unique utility: Bloodlust/Heroism, Wind Rush Totem, Skyfury (Mastery and bonus melee attack aura for group), interrupt via Wind Shear, Hex crowd control.
Hero Talent Paths
| Path | Identity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stormbringer | Lightning-focused; Tempest as the major spender; high overload frequency | Recommended for all content — ahead in both ST and AoE after Midnight tuning |
| Farseer | Summons Ancestors that mirror your Lava Burst and Chain Lightning casts | Better for spread-cleave fights requiring high mobility; ~15% ST loss vs Stormbringer |
Strengths
- Incredible burst AoE, especially during Ascendance
- Simple priority system with a low barrier to entry
- Diverse utility through totems and class abilities
- Flexible weapon choices between durability (shield) and aesthetics (staff)
Weaknesses
- Limited mobility — stationary casting is required for maximum output
- Defensive toolkit lags behind other ranged specs, especially in Mythic+
Stat Priority
| Priority | Stat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Intellect | Always follow item level |
| 2 | Mastery | Priority to first breakpoint (~1,200 rating / 72%); synergises with overloads — nearly useless above 100% |
| 3 | Critical Strike | Equal to Haste after Mastery cap; "significantly better in Midnight" than prior expansions |
| 3 | Haste | Equal to Crit after Mastery cap; reduces cast times and cooldown timers on rotational abilities |
| 5 | Versatility | Avoid where possible — lowest value secondary |
Key rule: Get Mastery to ~1,200 rating (72%) first, then split the remaining secondary stat budget evenly between Critical Strike and Haste. With talent bonuses, the practical Mastery cap sits around 76–86% depending on gear.
Diminishing Returns Thresholds
| Stat | DR Threshold |
|---|---|
| Critical Strike | 1,380 rating |
| Haste | 1,320 rating |
| Mastery | 1,380 rating |
| Versatility | 1,620 rating |

Talent Builds
Stormbringer is recommended for all content after Midnight's Tempest buffs pushed it ahead in both single-target and AoE. Farseer remains the pick for spread-cleave encounters or fights demanding significant movement.
Stormbringer — Raid
High crit damage with high crit chance and a plethora of overloads. Synergises strongly with the tier set bonus on Stormkeeper. Best for stationary fights with volatile, high-damage output.
Stormbringer — Mythic+
Apex talents enhance personal spell damage and overload frequency. The tier set 4-piece bonus is particularly strong for Chain Lightning and Lightning Bolt spam. Expected to outperform Farseer in dungeons.
Farseer — Raid (Mobility/Spread Cleave)
Trades ~15% single-target damage for more instant-cast flexibility and better spread cleave via Ancestors mirroring your casts. Recommended for specific bosses like Lightblinded Vanguard.

| Ascendance | Applies Flame Shock to up to 6 enemies. Buffs overloads by 75% and adds one additional overload trigger to all eligible spells. Cast Stormkeeper before Ascendance to maximise the window. |
| Tempest (Stormbringer) | Use at 10 Maelstrom stacks. On ST it replaces Lightning Bolt; in AoE it replaces Chain Lightning. Never let it stack-cap and waste generation. |

Tips & Common Mistakes
- Mastery first, then balance — reaching ~72% Mastery (1,200 rating) before investing in other secondaries is the single biggest stat optimization for Elemental. Mastery dramatically amplifies every overload proc; skipping this threshold is a consistent underperformance cause.
- Stormkeeper before Ascendance — Stormkeeper's empowered Lightning Bolts deal massively more damage inside the Ascendance overload buff window. The order matters: Stormkeeper first, then Ascendance.
- Never sit on Lava Surge procs — a Lava Surge proc resets Lava Burst to instant. Letting it expire while casting a lower-priority spell is a direct DPS loss.
- Farseer is not a fallback — it is a genuine build choice for specific fight profiles. If a fight has spread cleave or heavy movement requirements, Farseer is the correct pick. Don't play it because it feels safer; play it because the fight calls for it.
- Spiritwalker's Grace is a rotation tool — don't hoard it for emergencies. Any forced movement window during a burst phase is the right time to use it.
- Versatility is a trap — even when item level would suggest a Versatility piece is an upgrade, the stat has almost no synergy with Elemental's kit. Sim before equipping high-Versatility gear.
