WoW Midnight — Devourer Demon Hunter Guide
A complete Devourer Demon Hunter guide for WoW Midnight: the new ranged void caster DPS spec. Covers stat priority, Annihilator and Void-Scarred builds, Void Metamorphosis mechanics, full openers and priority lists, Soul Smuggling and advanced techniques, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.
Overview
Devourer is the new Demon Hunter spec added in Midnight — a ranged void caster DPS with a 25-yard range, leather armor, and a playstyle unlike either Havoc or Vengeance. Where Havoc swings glaives in melee and Vengeance tanks, Devourer channels void energy at range, building Soul Fragments and Fury to fuel Void Metamorphosis windows where all meaningful damage is delivered.
"Devourer is well-suited for players who enjoy highly mobile casters, with an emphasis on powerful, fluid cooldowns, or who like to bounce into and out of melee combat."
Unique utility: Chaos Brand — increases enemy magic damage taken by 3%. Shared with all Demon Hunter specs.
Dual resource system:
- Fury — generated by Consume, Reap, and Voidblade. Spent on Void Ray (100 Fury).
- Soul Fragments — generated by most abilities and collected from the ground. Required to enter Void Metamorphosis (50 fragments; 35 with Soul Glutton talent).
Hero Talent Paths
| Path | Focus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Annihilator | Void Ray–driven with Collapsing Star as primary damage; Reap resets during Meta | Recommended for raid and M+ — more damage flexibility; better tuning currently |
| Void-Scarred | Voidblade/melee integration; Voidsurge trigger on first empowered ability in Meta | Has active bugs currently — Annihilator preferred until resolved |
All builds are within 1–2% of each other in performance.
Strengths
- Exceptional mobility via Shift
- Frequent, high-damage Void Metamorphosis burst windows
- Strong self-sustain and defensives
- Chaos Brand group utility
- Visually distinctive void animations
Weaknesses
- Limited damage output outside Metamorphosis windows
- Slow ramp-up at combat start
- Mistakes during Metamorphosis windows are heavily punishing — mistakes cost a full burst phase
- Void-Scarred melee integration creates positioning risks in some encounters
- Resource generation dependency makes rotation feel constrained between windows
Core Mechanics
Understanding Void Metamorphosis is the entire spec. Everything else exists to enable it.
Void Metamorphosis: Enter by collecting 50 Soul Fragments (35 with Soul Glutton). Duration is determined by Fury drain rate — not a fixed timer. Doubles Mastery effectiveness. Inside the form:
- Consume → Devour
- Reap → Cull (30% more damage)
- Void Ray: no Fury cost; pauses Fury drain while channeling
- Collapsing Star unlocks (requires 30 Soul Fragments, 4–5 casts per window)
Moment of Craving: After fully channeling Void Ray, Reap's cooldown resets and the next Reap collects up to 6 additional Soul Fragments. This is your highest-value proc. Never waste it — use it to cast Collapsing Star or another high-damage ability.
Devourer's Bite: Voidblade applies a debuff increasing damage taken by +12%. Stack it just before entering Void Metamorphosis to maximize Collapsing Star and Cull damage.
Soul Smuggling: Soul Fragments left on the ground are not lost — they persist until collected. You can leave them between Metamorphosis phases to pre-load the next form activation. This is an advanced technique to accelerate your next window.
Stat Priority
Stat priorities differ between Hero Talent paths.
Annihilator
| Priority | Stat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Intellect | Always follow item level |
| 2 | Haste | Increases cast speed, reduces GCD, reduces Void Ray cooldown inside Meta — more time in empowered state |
| 3 | Mastery | Increases Cosmic damage; effect more than doubles inside Void Metamorphosis |
| 4 | Critical Strike | Reduced value — Collapsing Star always critically strikes; related talents don't fully compensate |
| 5 | Versatility | Lowest priority; avoid over-investing |
Void-Scarred
| Priority | Stat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Intellect | Always follow item level |
| 2 | Mastery | Higher weight due to melee integration and different Metamorphosis power curve |
| 3 | Haste | Second priority instead of first |
| 4 | Critical Strike | |
| 5 | Versatility |
Diminishing Returns Thresholds
| Stat | DR Threshold |
|---|---|
| Critical Strike | 1,380 rating |
| Haste | 1,320 rating |
| Mastery | 1,380 rating |
| Versatility | 1,620 rating |
Sim your character on Raidbots for personalized weights — the Haste vs. Mastery split between the two paths is meaningful.

Cooldown Reference
| Cooldown | Notes |
|---|---|
| Void Metamorphosis | Core burst form. Activate at 50 Fragments (35 with Soul Glutton). Duration is Fury-drain based. Always pair with trinkets and potions. |
| Collapsing Star | Meta-only. Requires 30 Fragments per cast. Target 4–5 casts per window. Always crits. |
| Voidblade | Cast just before entering Meta to apply Devourer's Bite (+12% damage taken debuff). Inside Meta: empowered version is Pierce the Veil. |
| The Hunt (Void-Scarred) | Pair with Voidblade before Meta for maximum debuff overlap. Inside Meta: empowered as Predator's Wake. |
Advanced Techniques
Soul Smuggling: Soul Fragments left on the ground are not lost. Leave them between Metamorphosis phases to accelerate the next form activation — pre-loading Fragments shortens the gap between windows.
Moment of Craving: After fully channeling Void Ray, Reap's cooldown resets and the next Reap collects up to 6 additional Fragments. Cast high-damage abilities (Collapsing Star) immediately after this proc — never waste the collection window.
Devourer's Bite optimization: Stack the debuff just before Meta, then use the second application window inside the form for Collapsing Star or another proc ability. Pre-Meta Voidblade → enter form → Collapsing Star benefits from the full +12% bonus.
Reap/Cull fragment collection: Always aim for maximum fragment collection (4 normally, 10 with Moment of Craving). Soulshaper talent increases damage per fragment collected — incomplete collects are meaningful losses.

Trinket strategy: Align on-use cooldown trinkets with Void Metamorphosis windows for full burst overlap.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Play Annihilator until Void-Scarred bugs are resolved — it performs better and has no unresolved mechanics.
- Void Metamorphosis is your entire job — every decision outside the form is either building toward it or setting up the Devourer's Bite debuff. Never enter a form with weak debuff coverage.
- Never waste Moment of Craving — it resets Reap after a full Void Ray channel and grants 6 extra Fragment collection. Cast Collapsing Star immediately after.
- Soul Smuggling is free value — leaving Fragments on the ground between windows doesn't lose them. Get comfortable with the mechanic to shorten your windows' gaps.
- Collapsing Star requires 30 Fragments per cast — plan your Fragment generation inside Meta to hit 4–5 casts per window. Running out of Fragments mid-window is a burst-phase loss.
- Devourer's Bite before every Meta — Voidblade just before entering form should be automatic. The +12% damage taken bonus should cover your Collapsing Star casts.
- Sim your stat split — the Haste vs. Mastery priority difference between Annihilator and Void-Scarred is real. If you switch paths, re-sim.
