WoW Midnight — Assassination Rogue Guide

A complete Assassination Rogue DPS guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, Fatebound and Deathstalker builds, bleed and poison management, Deathmark and Kingsbane alignment, opener and priority list, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.

Overview

Assassination Rogue is a damage-over-time spec built around applying and amplifying Nature-based poisons and bleed effects. The core loop is maintaining Garrote and Rupture on targets at all times, spending combo points on Envenom to empower poison damage, and detonating Deathmark to double the damage of all active DoTs simultaneously. The spec is Energy-locked, not GCD-locked — the correct question is never "what do I press next?" but "is this the most efficient use of my Energy right now?" Downtime between rotational abilities is intentional. Forcing casts into Energy deficits is a mistake; building toward burst windows with efficient Energy management is the skill expression.

Assassination is well-suited to progression environments where fights are longer and ramp-up time is rewarded. It struggles on short-lived add packs and encounters where targets die before DoTs accrue value.

Unique utility: Tricks of the Trade (threat redirect), Shroud of Concealment (group stealth), Blind (disorient), Kidney Shot (stun), Shiv (slow + utility poison application), Cloak of Shadows (magic immunity), Shadowstep (blink), Evasion (dodge), Crimson Vial (self-heal).

Hero Talent Paths

Path Identity Notes
Fatebound Hand of Fate proc system; coin-flip mechanics; easier execution Recommended for single-target and all general content — more relaxed playstyle, no special min-maxing required
Deathstalker Deathstalker's Mark stacking debuff; higher ceiling in multi-target; Darkest Night reset Recommended by top players for Mythic+ funnel damage; heavily punishes mistakes and target-switching

Strengths

  • Strong single-target damage and sustained melee cleave via DoTs
  • Good execute-phase performance — Deathmark doubles active DoT damage, which scales hard when targets are low
  • Slower-paced between burst windows — well-suited for progression where fight knowledge matters more than APM
  • Solid personal survivability for a melee DPS

Weaknesses

  • Long opener and ramp-up time — DoTs need time to tick; short-lived enemies get minimal value
  • Complex AoE rotation requiring significant effort to execute well in Mythic+
  • Less burst damage on short encounters where DoTs can't compound
  • Deathstalker variant punishes target-switching disproportionately

Stat Priority

Priority Stat Notes
1 Agility Always follow item level
2 Critical Strike Best secondary — doubles damage; also generates bonus combo points via Seal Fate
3 Haste Speeds up attacks and DoT tick rates; accelerates Energy regeneration
4 Mastery Mastery: Potent Assassin — increases Nature damage and bleed damage
5 Versatility Flat damage/reduction; lowest priority secondary

Critical Strike and Haste are close in value and can shift depending on gear combinations. Mastery scales well in DoT-heavy scenarios but Crit's combo point generation via Seal Fate keeps it ahead generally. Use Raidbots for character-specific optimization.

Diminishing Returns Thresholds

Stat DR Threshold
Critical Strike 1,380 rating
Haste 1,320 rating
Mastery 1,380 rating
Versatility 1,620 rating

Talent Builds

Fatebound is recommended for most content. It provides strong single-target output without requiring the precise execution that Deathstalker demands. Fatebound's priority list is "much more relaxed and does not require any special min-maxing." Deathstalker is the choice for experienced players pushing Mythic+ who can manage the mark mechanics and target-switching restrictions.

Fatebound — Raid

General raid configuration emphasising Crimson Tempest and Caustic Spatter for add coverage. Shrouded Suffocation for enhanced Garrote damage and stealth combo points. Adjustable: swap to a single-target build for pure ST encounters by dropping Doomblade for Crimson Tempest.

Fatebound — Mythic+

Emphasis on single-target damage while maintaining AoE capability. Maintains the core Fatebound rotation with dungeon-appropriate utility talents.

Deathstalker — Mythic+ (Top Player Alternative)

Higher ceiling through Deathstalker's Mark funnel damage via Singular Focus. Darkest Night resets provide additional burst windows. Requires careful management — marks cannot be freely transferred to new targets while active, making target-switching a significant execution cost.

Envenom Primary finisher Empowers poison damage; spend at 5+ combo points; Deathstalker: prioritize at max CP with Darkest Night active
Mutilate Primary builder Primary combo point generator; use to build to 5+ CP
Fan of Knives AoE builder Replaces Mutilate at 2+ targets for combo point generation
Crimson Tempest AoE finisher Spreads bleeds to multiple targets; use at 5+ CP in AoE
Deathmark Primary DPS cooldown 2-min cooldown; doubles damage from Garrote, Rupture, and lethal poisons; align Vanish + Improved Garrote with every Deathmark
Kingsbane Secondary DPS cooldown 1-min cooldown; instant damage + escalating DoT; always cast immediately after Deathmark
Vanish Stealth reset Enables Improved Garrote; sync with Deathmark in single-target; hold for re-stealth in Mythic+
Shiv Utility + combo gen Applies utility poison; Toxic Stiletto reduces its Energy cost significantly

Pre-combat: Apply Deadly Poison and Amplifying Poison before every pull. This applies to all content — raids, dungeons, delves, open world.

Opener

Step Action
Pre-pull Apply Deadly Poison + Amplifying Poison
Pre-combat Enter Stealth
1 Garrote (Improved Garrote from Stealth)
2 Deathmark
3 Kingsbane (immediately after Deathmark)
4 Vanish → Garrote (re-apply Improved Garrote inside Deathmark)
5 Mutilate until 5+ combo points
6 Envenom
7 Rupture (maintain bleed)
Resume priority rotation

Single-Target Priority — Fatebound

  1. Maintain Garrote (re-apply from Vanish for Improved Garrote)
  2. Maintain Rupture (5+ combo points)
  3. Vanish → Garrote (sync with Deathmark windows)
  4. Deathmark (on cooldown)
  5. Kingsbane (immediately after Deathmark)
  6. Envenom (5+ combo points)
  7. Mutilate (builder)

Single-Target Priority — Deathstalker

Same as Fatebound with these additions:

  • Envenom at maximum combo points when Darkest Night is active — this takes priority
  • Cast Envenom at 5+ combo points unless at 80 stacks of Implacable
  • Shiv to reach the final combo point if Toxic Stiletto reduces its Energy cost sufficiently

AoE Priority (2+ Targets)

  1. Maintain Garrote on primary target
  2. Maintain Rupture via 5+ combo point casts
  3. Crimson Tempest (spread bleeds; use until 5+ CP or all targets are debuffed)
  4. Fan of Knives (AoE builder)
  5. Vanish → Garrote (or hold for chain-pulls in Mythic+)
  6. Deathmark (on cooldown)
  7. Kingsbane (after Deathmark)
  8. Envenom (5+ combo points)

Cooldown Reference

Cooldown Notes
Deathmark The primary burst window. Doubles damage from Garrote, Rupture, and all lethal poisons — including the empowered Improved Garrote from stealth. Every Deathmark should be preceded by a Vanish → Improved Garrote cast to maximise the window. In single-target, Deathmark and Vanish should always be used together.
Kingsbane Always cast immediately after Deathmark. Kingsbane's DoT escalates with each poison application — Deathmark's duplicated poison applications greatly accelerate the ramp time, making the pairing significantly stronger than either cooldown used alone. Never use Kingsbane outside a Deathmark window.
Vanish Re-enters stealth and enables Improved Garrote — a significantly empowered version of the bleed. In single-target, sync every Vanish with Deathmark. In Mythic+, you may hold Vanish to re-enter stealth between pulls for chain-pull setups.
Shiv Low-Energy attack that applies a utility poison. With Toxic Stiletto, the Energy cost drops enough to make it a viable finisher-point generator when you're one combo point away from a priority finisher. Don't burn it frivolously — its utility poison application has situational value in specific dungeons.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Assassination is Energy-locked, not GCD-locked — the rotation has intentional downtime. Forcing casts during Energy deficits is always wrong. Wait for Energy to regenerate and hit the next ability at full efficiency rather than pressing something suboptimal immediately.
  • Deathmark + Vanish + Improved Garrote is the combo — Deathmark doubles Garrote damage. Improved Garrote from stealth is significantly stronger than a normal Garrote. Every Deathmark window in single-target should include a Vanish to re-apply Improved Garrote inside the doubled-damage window. Doing this wrong is the most common source of lost Deathmark value.
  • Kingsbane always after Deathmark — the DoT escalates with poison applications, and Deathmark's duplicated poison application dramatically speeds up the ramp. Using Kingsbane outside a Deathmark window is a meaningful DPS loss. Never do it.
  • Garrote must be maintained at all times — it is your highest-damage DoT and feeds into every damage amplification in the spec. Letting it fall off at an awkward moment is always a mistake. Watch the timer.
  • Fatebound over Deathstalker unless you know what you're doing — Deathstalker has a higher ceiling in multi-target, but the execution requirements are significant. The mark cannot be freely transferred, making target-switching costly. Fatebound is the correct default for all players who aren't specifically optimizing for Mythic+ with deep encounter knowledge.
  • DoTs need time to tick — Assassination's damage profile rewards long fights. On short-lived enemies or trash that dies quickly, your actual contribution is much lower than the spec's potential. Adjust expectations accordingly, and on add-heavy fights, prioritize spreading DoTs before targets die.
