WoW Midnight — Arcane Mage Guide

A complete Arcane Mage guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, Spellslinger builds, three-phase rotation (Bigburn/Miniburn/Filler), Arcane Surge timing, resource management, openers and priority lists, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.

Overview

Arcane Mage is a burst-heavy ranged caster built around enormous cooldown windows and tight resource management. The majority of damage comes from Arcane Surge and Touch of the Magi windows — outside of those, you're building resources for the next burst phase. The rotation runs on four simultaneous tracks: mana, Arcane Charges, Arcane Salvo stacks, and cooldown timing. Midnight removed several legacy mechanics including Nether Precision (base Arcane Missiles damage was increased to compensate), Evocation's Siphon Storm, and the guaranteed 13th-cast Clearcasting proc.

Unique utility: Time Warp — 30% haste to the group for 40 sec. Spellsteal. Polymorph. Remove Curse. Dragon's Breath.

Core principle: Don't sit on cooldowns. Arcane Surge provides mana refunds and damage buffs — holding it reduces overall throughput and creates mana management problems downstream.

Hero Talent Paths

Path Focus Notes
Spellslinger Arcane Splinter generation; Orb-based rotation; consistent damage amplification Recommended for all content — 18–25% more damage than Sunfury across all content types
Sunfury Spellfire Spheres; Arcane Phoenix during burst windows; Touch of the Magi delay for alignment Currently underperforms in all content vs. Spellslinger

Strengths

  • Highest peak burst damage of any caster during Arcane Surge windows
  • Excellent group utility (Time Warp, Spellsteal, Polymorph, Remove Curse)
  • Strong mobility (Blink, Alter Time, Shimmer)
  • Single-target damage scales with nearby enemy count

Weaknesses

  • Mistiming cooldowns or mana management severely reduces effectiveness
  • Punishing if Arcane Surge is held or mana is overspent
  • Limited self-healing — relies on damage prevention
  • Less flexible talent choices than other Mage specs

Stat Priority

Priority Stat Notes
1 Intellect Always follow item level
2 Mastery Enhances Arcane Charge effectiveness; boosts all Arcane damage; increases mana pool and regeneration
3 Haste Faster casts, lower GCD; doesn't create mana problems because cooldowns provide regen
4 Critical Strike Useful but lower priority
5 Versatility Flat damage and damage reduction; lowest priority

Both Spellslinger and Sunfury share identical stat priorities.

Diminishing Returns Thresholds

Stat DR Threshold
Critical Strike 1,380 rating
Haste 1,320 rating
Mastery 1,380 rating
Versatility 1,620 rating

Item level often outweighs stat optimization. Sim on Raidbots for personalized weights.

Talent Builds

Spellslinger is recommended for all content. Sunfury currently underperforms by 18–25% across all scenarios.

Key Spellslinger talents:

  • Arcane Orb (core spell — generates Arcane Splinters)
  • Orb Mastery (capstone)
  • Arcane Salvo
  • Eureka (single-target — swap to Resonance for cleave)

Build variants:

  • *Orb Build (Recommended):* Arcane Orb generates Arcane Salvo stacks quickly; Arcane Orb replaces Clearcasting procs as the primary spender
  • Missile Build: Uses High Voltage to generate Arcane Charges from Arcane Missiles — more complex, minor throughput difference

Rotation & Cooldowns

Three Rotation Phases

Arcane's rotation is divided into three phases based on which cooldowns are active:

Phase Condition Focus
Bigburn Both Arcane Surge AND Touch of the Magi active Maximum damage output; use potions and trinkets here
Miniburn Touch of the Magi active alone Moderate burst; spend Arcane Charges aggressively
Filler No major cooldowns active Build Arcane Salvo stacks and Arcane Charges for next window

Core Resource Loop

Arcane Charges (0–4): Generated by Arcane Blast, Arcane Explosion, Arcane Pulse, Arcane Orb, and Touch of the Magi. Consumed by Arcane Barrage. Each stack increases Arcane Blast damage and mana cost.

Arcane Salvo stacks: Generated by the Spellslinger tree. At 20 stacks, cast Arcane Barrage to spend them for maximum damage.

Mana: Running out is acceptable and expected between cooldown windows. Use Arcane Barrage to reduce Charges and throttle mana spending. Arcane Surge refunds mana on use.

Simplified Core Loop — Spellslinger Orb Build

  1. Default filler: Arcane Blast (single-target) or Arcane Pulse (AoE)
  2. At 20 Arcane Salvo stacks: cast Arcane Barrage
  3. After Barrage, if Clearcasting active: cast Arcane Orb
  4. Repeat

Important: Do NOT use Arcane Missiles or Arcane Explosion in the Spellslinger Orb build. Arcane Orb replaces Clearcasting as the primary spender.

Opener (Spellslinger)

Step Action
Pre-pull Pool Arcane Charges to 4; build Arcane Salvo stacks
1 Touch of the Magi (on pull)
2 Arcane Surge (immediately after — enters Bigburn phase)
3 Potion + on-use trinkets
4 Arcane Barrage (at 20 Salvo stacks)
5 Arcane Orb (Clearcasting active after Barrage)
6 Arcane Blast × 2–3
7 Arcane Barrage (at 20 stacks again)
Continue priority list

Single-Target Priority

During Bigburn (Arcane Surge + Touch of the Magi active):

  1. Arcane Barrage (at 20 Arcane Salvo stacks)
  2. Arcane Orb (Clearcasting active after Barrage)
  3. Arcane Blast (Arcane Charges at 4)
  4. Arcane Blast (filler)

During Miniburn (Touch of the Magi active, no Arcane Surge):

  1. Arcane Barrage (at 20 Arcane Salvo stacks)
  2. Arcane Orb (Clearcasting)
  3. Arcane Blast

Filler Phase:

  1. Arcane Blast (build Salvo stacks)
  2. Arcane Barrage (at 20 stacks)
  3. Arcane Orb (Clearcasting)
  4. Arcane Surge (when available — don't hold)
  5. Touch of the Magi (when available)

AoE Adjustments

  • Replace Arcane Blast → Arcane Pulse at 3+ targets
  • Replace single-target Clearcasting usage with AoE variants
  • Arcane Explosion builds Charges in AoE situations

Cooldown Reference

Cooldown Notes
Arcane Surge Do not hold. The mana refund and damage buff mean holding it always loses value. Pair with Touch of the Magi for Bigburn phase.
Touch of the Magi Activates the Bigburn phase when combined with Arcane Surge; Miniburn phase alone. Use on cooldown.
Time Warp Coordinate with your group/raid leader. In raid, typically assigned during a specific pull phase. In M+, use proactively on large pulls.

Crest upgrade order: Weapon first → strong trinkets → highest stat-budget armor.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Never hold Arcane Surge — there is no better window coming. Every second it sits on cooldown is damage lost. Arcane Surge refunds mana, solving the resource problem it creates.
  • The warning about single-button rotation — the automated rotation assistant performs approximately 38% worse than manual play for Arcane, compared to 10–25% for other specs. This spec requires manual cooldown management.
  • Spellslinger Orb Build: no Arcane Missiles — this is counterintuitive since Arcane Missiles has been a core Arcane button for years. In the Orb build, Arcane Orb replaces the Clearcasting proc entirely. Casting Arcane Missiles breaks the Salvo stack loop.
  • Arcane Orb targeting — occasionally has targeting issues against enemies on elevated platforms or in pit encounters. If your Orb misses, you lose the proc; position carefully.
  • Sunfury's Bigburn alignment — if you play Sunfury, Touch of the Magi must be delayed to align with Arcane Soul windows. This is a significant rotational overhead compared to Spellslinger's simpler alignment, which is part of why Spellslinger performs better for most players.
  • Race for Mythic+: Dwarf (Stoneform provides poison cleanse and a crit bonus) and Night Elf (Shadowmeld drops threat and provides utility) are the top M+ choices. For pure damage, Pandaren, Troll, and Orc are the top raid options.
