WoW Midnight — Shadow Priest Guide
A complete Shadow Priest DPS guide for WoW Midnight: stat priority, Voidweaver and Archon builds, Insanity and Shadow Word: Madness management, Voidform alignment, opener and priority list, enchants, gems, consumables, and Season 1 BiS gear.
Overview
Shadow Priest is a Insanity-fueled ranged DPS spec built around maintaining Shadow Word: Madness uptime, feeding damage-over-time effects through Mastery: Shadow Weaving, and reacting to procs from Shadowy Insight and Mind Devourer. The core loop is generating and spending Insanity to sustain Shadow Word: Madness, keeping short-cooldown abilities on cooldown, and maximizing the damage multiplier from having multiple DoT effects active on a target simultaneously. Shadow's greatest strength is cleave — it distributes damage across multiple targets efficiently without sacrificing single-target output. Its greatest weakness is the same: it needs multiple targets to reach peak performance and struggles in pure single-target environments.
Core restriction: Mastery: Shadow Weaving increases damage against targets affected by multiple DoT effects — the more DoTs active, the greater the amplification. Maintaining DoT coverage is not optional.
Unique utility: Power Word: Fortitude (group Stamina buff), Mass Dispel, Dispel Magic, Silence, Leap of Faith (grip), Vampiric Embrace (passive group healing from shadow damage).
Hero Talent Paths
| Path | Identity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Voidweaver | Void Torrent opens Entropic Rift; Void Blast replaces Mind Blast; Tentacle Slam for Void Apparitions | Recommended for all content — significantly better than Archon across all formats |
| Archon | Halo for AoE burst; extended duration effects | Lower performance; viable but not competitive in Season 1 |
Strengths
- Excellent spread cleave — efficient damage across multiple targets without sacrificing single-target output
- Strong self-healing via Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch — improves survivability against sustained damage
- Flexible target-switching with DoT application
- Psychic Link enables passive cleave without adjusting rotation
Weaknesses
- Weak single-target damage — heavily reliant on additional targets to reach full potential
- Poor mobility — limited movement options during channelling
- Requires standing still for optimal DoT and cleave effectiveness
- Insanity management punishes downtime severely
Stat Priority
| Priority | Stat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Intellect | Always follow item level |
| 2 | Haste | Best secondary — reduces cast times, adds DoT ticks, compresses rotation |
| 3 | Mastery | Shadow Weaving — increases damage against targets with multiple DoTs; scales well with multi-target |
| 4 | Critical Strike | Doubles spell damage; approximately equal to Mastery in value |
| 5 | Versatility | Linear damage gain; does not interact with Mastery or DoT amplification |
Haste and Mastery both scale well into late-season gear for Shadow. Sim at higher item levels — the gap between them can shift depending on target count and encounter type. Use Raidbots or SimulationCraft for character-specific optimization.
Diminishing Returns Thresholds
| Stat | DR Threshold |
|---|---|
| Critical Strike | 1,380 rating |
| Haste | 1,320 rating |
| Mastery | 1,380 rating |
| Versatility | 1,620 rating |
Talent Builds
Voidweaver is recommended for all content. It significantly outperforms Archon in Season 1 across both raid and Mythic+ environments. The Entropic Rift window from Void Torrent creates a powerful burst phase, and Void Blast replacing Mind Blast during the rift provides meaningful damage uplift.
Voidweaver — Raid
Maximises Idol talents for Void Apparition empowerment via Tentacle Slam. Focus on Shadowy Apparitions for passive shadow damage. For encounters with adds or sustained cleave phases, replace Descending Darkness with Psychic Link to apply DoT damage across multiple targets.
Voidweaver — Mythic+
Flexible between Misery and Invoked Nightmare based on pull size:
- Misery: Better for single-target bosses and small pulls — extends Shadow Word: Pain application
- Invoked Nightmare: Better for large pulls — increases Shadow Word: Pain damage by 150%
Archon — (Alternative)
Uses Halo for AoE burst. Lower overall output than Voidweaver in current tuning but playable if preferred.

Rotation & Cooldowns
Core Abilities Reference
| Ability | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow Word: Madness | Primary Insanity spender + DoT | Maintain uptime at all costs; Mastery: Shadow Weaving amplifies damage while it's active |
| Vampiric Touch | Primary DoT + Insanity gen | Core DoT; apply and maintain; triggers Tentacle Slam application |
| Shadow Word: Pain | Secondary DoT | Maintain on all targets; Invoked Nightmare increases its damage by 150% on large pulls |
| Mind Blast | Primary filler + Insanity | Use on cooldown; Void Blast replaces it during Entropic Rift |
| Void Blast (Voidweaver) | Empowered filler | Replaces Mind Blast during Entropic Rift; use when Shadow Word: Madness is active or rift is expiring |
| Void Torrent (Voidweaver) | Entropic Rift trigger + Insanity | Opens Entropic Rift, enabling Void Blast spam; key burst ability |
| Tentacle Slam (Voidweaver) | DoT applicator + Void Apparition | Applies Vampiric Touch; triggers Idol effects; use for DoT spread and Apparition generation |
| Voidform | Secondary burst cooldown | 20% spell damage for 20 seconds; primary value is Void Volley AoE spam |
| Power Infusion | Primary burst cooldown | 20% Haste to self and one ally for 20 seconds; align with damage windows |
| Shadow Word: Death | Execute + proc | Use on targets with absorb shields; triggers Shadowy Insight and Expiation |
| Mind Flay | Filler | Lowest priority; interrupt freely for any higher-priority ability |
Insanity: Maximum 100. Spend on Shadow Word: Madness to maintain uptime. Never let Insanity cap with Shadow Word: Madness falling off — that is the cardinal failure state of the spec.
Shadowy Insight: A proc that must be consumed immediately. Reaction time to procs is a core skill expression for Shadow Priest.
Opener — Voidweaver
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Pre-cast | Mind Blast |
| 1 | Tentacle Slam |
| 2 | Shadow Word: Pain (if running Invoked Nightmare) |
| 3 | Power Infusion + Tempered Potion + on-use trinkets |
| 4 | Voidform |
| 5 | Void Volley |
| 6 | Shadow Word: Madness |
| 7 | Void Torrent (opens Entropic Rift) |
| 8 | Void Blast spam (during Entropic Rift) |
| → | Resume priority rotation |
Priority — Voidweaver (Single Target)
- Vampiric Touch (maintain via Tentacle Slam or hard cast)
- Power Infusion (on cooldown; align with damage windows)
- Shadow Word: Death (if target has absorb shield)
- Void Blast (during Entropic Rift, or when rift is expiring)
- Shadow Word: Madness (when not active, falling off, Insanity capping, or Entropic Rift active)
- Void Torrent (opens Entropic Rift)
- Mind Blast (on cooldown)
- Shadow Word: Madness (Insanity maintenance)
- Tentacle Slam (no additional targets or movement)
- Mind Flay (filler — interrupt freely)
On movement: Tentacle Slam → Shadow Word: Death → Shadow Word: Pain are all instant-cast and usable while moving.
Priority — AoE / Cleave
Mirror the single-target priority. Add Psychic Link for multi-target encounters — it applies direct damage across all targets sharing your DoT debuffs. Use Tentacle Slam aggressively for DoT spread. Shadow Word: Pain application on all targets via Misery or manual spread.
Cooldown Reference
| Cooldown | Notes |
|---|---|
| Power Infusion | 20% Haste increase for 20 seconds. Primary burst cooldown — align with Voidform and Void Torrent windows. The Haste increase compresses the rotation, enabling more Void Blast casts inside Entropic Rift. Coordinate with a healer or other teammate for the shared Haste benefit when not self-casting. |
| Voidform | 20% spell damage increase. The primary value is Void Volley — a heavy-hitting AoE ability replacing Void Eruption. Treat as a burst rotation trigger, not a cooldown to hold. Pair with Power Infusion. |
| Void Torrent (Voidweaver) | Opens Entropic Rift, enabling Void Blast spam. The spec's primary burst window. Use on cooldown. The rift window is when the highest-priority abilities (Void Blast) become available — entering the rift with Shadow Word: Madness active maximises the damage amplification. |
| Tentacle Slam (Voidweaver) | Applies Vampiric Touch and generates Void Apparitions. In AoE, this is your primary DoT application method. In single-target, use it when no movement or target switches are incoming. Never hold it for a "better moment" — it's a rotation ability. |

Tips & Common Mistakes
- Shadow Word: Madness must never drop — maintaining Insanity to keep Shadow Word: Madness active is the single most important mechanic for Shadow Priest. Dropping it while you have Insanity to spend is the equivalent of letting Enrage drop as a Fury Warrior. If you're approaching an Insanity cap with Shadow Word: Madness active, something else went wrong upstream.
- React to procs immediately — Shadowy Insight and Mind Devourer procs must be consumed the moment they appear. Shadow's skill expression is heavily proc-reactive. Delayed proc consumption is delayed damage, and with tight Insanity windows, delayed procs can cause Shadow Word: Madness to drop.
- Void Torrent opens the burst window — Entropic Rift from Void Torrent is when Void Blast becomes available. Enter the rift with Shadow Word: Madness active to stack Mastery: Shadow Weaving amplification on top of Void Blast hits. Void Torrent on cooldown; never hold it.
- Voidweaver, not Archon — Archon is not competitive in Season 1. If you're choosing for performance, Voidweaver is the pick for all content.
- Mastery rewards DoT coverage — Mastery: Shadow Weaving amplifies damage against targets with multiple DoTs active. In cleave and AoE scenarios this is extremely powerful, but it also means that in single-target, your baseline output is lower than specs that don't rely on DoT stacking. Learn the encounter damage profile before deciding on talent adjustments.
- Standing still matters — Shadow's DoT maintenance and channelled abilities (Mind Flay, Void Torrent) are compromised by movement. Position early on every mechanic to minimise time spent repositioning rather than casting.
